Henry Moore, Reclining Figure: Angles

Reclining Figure: Angles

1979
LH 675
bronze edition of 9 + 1
cast: Hermann Noack, Berlin
length 218cm

In Reclining Figure: Angles the sensual curves of the female form chime with those of the natural landscape – the broad expanse of the shoulders, the undulating vista down the torso and over the recumbent legs. The piece brings to mind not only the hills and dales of Moore's Yorkshire childhood, but also the rolling countryside surrounding his home at Perry Green. The lower limbs are solid and grounded, defining the space around them. The head, smaller in scale, emphasises the monumentality of the body.

Several editions of sculptures in Moore's oeuvre have greatly differing patinas. This particular cast of Reclining Figure: Angles is dark brown, but others within the edition, such as that in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, are patinated green. The Foundation's cast has travelled extensively throughout the world since its creation.
