Henry Moore, Goslar Warrior

Goslar Warrior

Goslar Warrior

1973–74
LH 641
bronze edition of 7 + 1
cast: Hermann Noack, Berlin
length 300cm

Moore rarely depicted the male form. This warrior figure recalls both the subject matter and heroic quality of Greek sculpture, at the same time suggesting the fragility of man. Here the defeated warrior has fallen.

This sculpture was being cast by the Noack Foundry in Berlin when Moore heard that he had been awarded a prestigious art prize by the town of Goslar in Germany. With the prize came a commission for a work to be sited prominently in Goslar itself; Moore decided to change the name of the sculpture to Goslar Warrior and to make a cast available to the town.
