The Arch 1963 (LH 503b)

#
#

bronze
height 610cm

The figure was originally meant to be a male torso with tensed shoulder-girdle bones forming a sort of arch. I first called the sculpture Large Torso; then I changed it to The Arch. The twisted, knotted strength of oak trees is something of what one wanted this figure to have.

Moore quoted in Henry Moore- Sculpture and Environment, Harry N. Abrams Inc Publishers, New York, 1976, page 462.
