Elmwood

This is the first of the larger reclining figures I have carved in wood and it was already one of the recurring themes in my sculpture in wood, stone and bronze. This carving is in Elmwood, as are most of the large wood carvings...Elmwood has rather a large wide grain. For this reason it is not a happy choice for small sculptures, but in a large reclining figure the horizontal grain emphasizes the horizontal pose…This first comparatively large wood carving led me, in later years, to produce wood reclining sculptures in even larger dimensions.
