Gift of the John Berggruen Gallery and fractional gift of Madeleine Haas Russell to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

The figure was originally meant to be a male torso with tensed shoulder-girdle bones forming a sort of arch. I first called the sculpture Large Torso; then I changed it to The Arch. The twisted, knotted strength of oak trees is something of what one wanted this figure to have.
